Filming Blog: Senior Patio
On Wednesday the 30th of September, my partner and I began filming. As the director I was in charge of getting the props, so I brought my Jan-sport backpack, and asked my fellow classmates with other Jan-sport backpacks to borrow them. We also had to ask our other classmates to be actors in our commercial. We were able to find three willing participants that would help us with our commercial. We did not need to change our clothes, because all of the actors were already wearing school clothes, such as; jeans, leggings, shorts, sweatshirts, and T-shirts. As the director, I told all of the actors where to stand and when to start moving. When we first began filming all of our actors were stiff and not completely sure what to. I thought it would be helpful for the actors to view our storyboard so that they could envision the scenes in their heads and then act them out with their bodies. This act was very beneficial in helping our team to understand our vision. I made sure to direct from the specific angles that we chose prior to filming in order to enhance the scenes. We began filming in the senior patio, and there were many students walking by, interrupting our scenes. There were a few instances where we had to re-film because students would accidentally get in the frame. Acting as the director, it was my responsibility to kindly ask the students to walk around us rather than through, and thankfully they obliged. I set up the props throughout filming, beginning with positioning the backpack in the very first scene where the first actor grabs the backpack off the bench. I had to be sure that the backpack was positioned so that the Jan-sport logo was in the center and was the main focus. I also had to carefully arrange pens and pencils scattered on the floor during the filming of the second scene. The arrangement of props was a very tedious process, because everything had to look picture perfect. Some of the areas in the patio needed to be cleaned, for instance there were food wrappers on the ground that we had to dispose of order to get a clean shot. Using the 1 and a half minutes we had to film, we were able to record three scenes, meaning we are now halfway done with our commercial. I am happy with my performance on my first directing job, however I hope to improve next time we film by making sure to perfect the angles I am recording from.
