AICE Media Studies Editing Blog: Putting It All Together

My group and I began to work on editing today, the 6th. We used an app called IMovie to create our commercial. I took charge and began putting the scenes together. Once all the scenes were in order, I noticed that our commercial was only 29 seconds long. I knew this was too short, because our commercial is supposed to be over 30 seconds. I went back to really analyze the scenes to see which one could be slowed down in order to make our commercial longer. I decided that the backpack handoff scene would be best slowed down and that it would better our commercial by adding dramatic effect to that scene. This worked out perfectly in the end because it made sense for our commercial and helped us to achieve the time goal. I also had to crop the final scene where all of the actors are walking away. This may seem counterintuitive as we were trying to make the commercial longer, but I explained to my group that the commercial would look much better and neater if we trimmed the duration of the closing scene. My group agreed and with that we were done cutting and lengthening scenes. Once I had reached the 30 second duration for the commercial it was time to edit. For the editing I had to go in and select scenes specifically to increase the brightness and saturation. These scenes were filmed on cloudy days so the brightness needed to be higher to match the other scenes filmed on sunnier days. For the overall commerical I increased the sharpness and vibrance. I believe this made the products, Jan-sport backpacks, look more vibrant and colorful. Weather and shadows are 2 factors that I, as editor, did not consider when filming. If I were to make another commercial I would be sure to work around the weather, and to try to keep the lighting in each scene the same. Luckily, I was able to fix this mistake by doing some color correction as well as adding brightness. With the time we had I was able to complete a large portion of the editing although, next class I will need to go back an add music to each scene.
